It may only be the start of fall in Ronkonkoma, but it’s actually the perfect time to go apple picking! Right now, apples are ripe for the picking at our many local apple farms and are ready for use in pies, cakes and other dishes, as well as tasty right off the branch.
This weekend, take the whole family to one of these apple farms located near your Alston apartment. With their hayrides, farm markets, mazes and children’s activities, you can make a whole day of it, ringing in autumn in the most festive way possible.
Lewin Farms, located at 812 Sound Ave, Calverton which is 22 minutes from your Alston apartment, is a fourth-generation farm which was the first you-pick farm on Long Island and continues to offer a wide variety of you-pick fields throughout the spring, summer and fall.
Picking your own locally grown apples at Lewin Farms is a great way to not only get the greatest tasting freshest produce at a low price, but also to not lose touch with where your food comes from. Check their schedule each week to see what apple varieties are ready to be picked!
Woodside Orchards, located at 729 Main Rd, Aquebogue which is 30 minutes from your Alston apartment, is a 40-year-old apple farm which grows nearly 30 varieties of apples for picking. Besides apple picking, here, you can also visit their shop where you can buy apple pies, apple wine, fresh and hard cider, as well as honey and gift items.
Woodside Orchards started as a small family run apple orchard that offered fresh fruit and baked goods. Robert and his wife Doris would sell the apples at local farmers markets and on the weekends at “The Apple Shed,” the farm stand on their property in Jamesport. It’s grown exponentially since then!
